Raisons d’être

R2R Start 5This image about sums it up for everything I like about paddleboard racing.

  1. This is not a sprint race; it’s the beginning of a 22 mile channel crossing, but everyone in it looks like they’re out for blood.  Seriously out for blood.
  2. The Redondo Rocket trading paint (“ramming speed!”).
  3. DJ looking like she could can-opener your head off with her arm (note: she can).
  4. Aussie traveling over to just to make you look bad by making it look easy (nice new board too!).
  5. Up-and-comers who will, no doubt, breathe down your neck in 3…2…1…
  6. Max checking out for what will be an inspired paddle — hell, the guy isn’t even the picture!

Everyone…feet up, getting after it, and having a good time.  I don’t need a ‘motivational’ poster or video; I have these folks.

Results Tommy Zahn Downwind Paddleboard Race

Good day racing. 3rd place stock division; 2:02. Conditions were perfect. Did we get wind…yes we had wind.  Did we have sun…sun was had. Was the surf absolutely firing…yes surf was epic.

Pics to come, as most of them were taken by others 🙂

Oh, the best part of the day? — a guy from New York paddled up and asked if I had a blog… Yes, this one…humble little Far and a Wey; it was one of the reasons he jumped on a plane and paddled the Zahn. Honored, stoked…and made a new friend. So cool.

Inspiration

DSCF0032

This is Ileana.
Ileana is a paddler.
Ileana is fast.
Ileana is 13 and just became the youngest person to finish the prestigious R2R Paddleboard Race (22.5 miles).  Check out her video — you’ll be inspired too:

I’m reminded that inspiration and heroes are not always people far removed, but rather, are sometimes the very same people who accomplish amazing things every single day…right next to us.

Ileana is my hero and I’m glad to be able to paddle with her and the MDR team every week.

Hey, Suffering Up Ahead

Am I doing this thing?  The question is always out there, like the unexpected wave that sweeps you off the board — big enough to keep you thinking.  “Enough hours in the water?; Enough days left to ‘feel’ like you have this?”  But there aren’t ever enough days and being in the water seems a hell of a lot more reasonable then some of the decisions we are compelled to make.  So, after a few clicks, I hit send and wait for the confirmation.  All in.

It’s All About Support

A big thanks to Mark Urkov and Urkov Charter Services for agreeing to provide boat support aboard “The Rough House”  for the 2013 Catalina Classic.  Mark’s knowledge of the water and his experience as a skipper will be essential during all 32 miles of the event.  Thanks Mark.
