4,186 Sleeps

I wish I had all of Daniel’s 4,186 sleeps on video–I would shamelessly put them on a loop, in reverse order, and watch him get younger with each passing day.  As it is, D is off to astro camp to consider the perigee of the moon (one of six “super-moons” this year), stay up late, and generally be a kick-ass 11-year old while mom and dad contemplate how to slow down this whole thing called ‘growing up.’  You can’t see it (like the new moon) but it’s larger and closer than we all think.

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like when you’re older must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams.

Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?

True story: in 5th grade, my teacher took us on an ‘oceanography’ field trip to (wait for it)…his fishing boat.  Now, to be fair, he was a billfisherman and harpooner at that, but I seriously think he needed to finish prepping “Sloppy Tail” (or whatever his boat was called) for a long weekend of fishing.

Cut to D’s 5th grade outing to The Getty Villa.  Grecian and Roman art at every turn, a beautiful hillside setting, on a 75 degree day in January.  Not a rapala or a six pack of Olympia to be found.  Oh how times change.

Get Into It

Cheers to you if you’re already getting into the holiday spirit via your kids and the wonderful creatures that they are #holidayrecitalsrock  $2K in audio/video equipment and I still couldn’t capture D. murdering some politically correct version of “Come All Ye Faithful.”  Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise…a true ear-cation.

Island to Island Race Action

What a difference a few weeks makes between The West End Loop Race and the 2014, Island to Island Waterman Challenge.  The Loop was brutal slugfest wherein nature punished all of the paddlers and reminded me why the heck we do these things–it takes heart.  I2I, at 32 miles, could have thrown us anything this year, but what we got was a perfectly glassy day, a great paddle battle with the 1st place unlimited team, and the overall win in under six hours.

The AlexSeal OC-1 was the perfect weapon for the day and I couldn’t ask for a better bunch of teammates…thank you Ryan Voci and Mark Urkov for hammering the paddle, as well as the pre- and after-party–total chargers (#teamthoseguys).  Video and additional pictures to come…stay tuned.

D-Sauce

Kid has mastered the slow-roll at age 11.  Can’t believe it…11.

Keep a bit of that swagger always.  Laugh at your dust, but don’t stare too long at your shadows.  Bodysurf–it’s one of the few things you can do your whole life.  Make sandwiches for your buddies and wave at pretty girls on the beach (one of them may end up being your beautiful wife).  Laugh at yourself and at others you meet in books.  Take time to be alone.  And, because I’m your Dad, “always watch a sunset, always smell the flowers, and always pet a nicey (good pets of all kinds).”  Oh, and “predictable is preventable”…remember that too–it’s a good one that I wished I would have learned a few decades earlier.  — Love, RST.

This Is Our Hammer

This is our hammer.

Caldwell
This is Stephen Caldwell. He goes by many names and nicknames (“Reno” mostly), but come Sunday, the day of the the 2014, Catalina Classic Paddleboard Marathon, he will be known as “go,” “push,” “faster,” and, at the end of 32 brutal miles, “the man.”

Reno is a threat on 14′ and he knows it; and, with that knowledge, there is a lot of pressure to perform.  He’s probably already feeling it now, but you wouldn’t be able to tell just by chatting with him. Gregarious, humble, generous, and dedicated, Reno is the man to whom all our effort will be focused come Sunday.

Skipper: Mark Urkov; Support Boat: The Rough House; Boat Bunny and Nutrition: Yours truly 🙂

Sunday, Reno Caldwell, and the majesty that is the Catalina Classic.  Bring it…and stay tuned.
